Willowbridge under construction

Updated 2005.09.20
Updated 2006.01.27 to reflect changes in range names

Scheduled to open in October, Willowbridge is the first large retail centre of its kind in Cape Town. A team of six from Vivid Architects is involved, with Paolo Viotti as the design architect and Trevor Versfeld handling "the contract side of things".

As the sun sets on the construction site, Pavatile's multi-axle truck, trailer and all-terrain forklift arrive to deliver another load, with cars rushing down Carl Cronjé Drive and the lights of Tyger Valley Centre in the background.

Pavatile products at Willowbridge include:

PlazaBlok 50 First used at Lake Michelle, this elegant block is now seen as "the durable alternative to exposed aggregate pavers".

SlateBlok 50 provides a friendly indoor-outdoor ambiguity.

SlateLok 50 With built-in spacers, this neat paving block inexpensively creates a tiled effect.

Step-Kerb-n-Edge These multi-functional ranges provide practical aesthetics.

EuroCobble 50 Circle-forming modules in various colours are used in an unusual manner.

Lava Radius Kerb 100 Curved kerbstones were embedded into the ground to form a neat edge to the traffic circle.

PlazaBlok 50 is a range from Pavatile's Granito texture family.

To avoid getting in the way of the builders on the congested site, Frans Pamplin of Pavatile is delivering palletloads of SlateBlok at night, carefully circumventing pillars and walls, scaffolding and building materials until the products are at the point of installation.

Assuring contractors' profits

A primary purpose of Pavatile's Personalised Delivery Service is to prevent the on-site damage and slow pace of installation which results from moving products in wheelbarrows to where they are required. Such problems cost installers thousands of rand on large contracts, and the erosion of profit is exacerbated by installation problems arising from unevenly sized paving blocks and the need for resource-intensive cuttings. To prevent the latter problems, Pavatile has spent a great deal of effort developing and implementing methods to ensure that its products can be cast to tight dimensional tolerances, and is constantly developing new modules for tricky spaces. Contractors are becoming increasingly aware that it is the total cost of the job, rather than the price per square metre of the blocks, which is the basis for their profit, and this has been a deciding factor in the choice of Pavatile as a supplier to many large contracts during the past months.
