The Lake Michelle Project (Noordhoek, Western Cape, South Africa)

Published 2005.03.22
Updated 2006.01.27 to reflect changes in range names.

To laymen, most building sites look smaller before than after the buildings, roads and gardens have been added — which makes me wonder how big the Lake Michelle* development will look when it's finished, because the site is vast, going on for kilometres; in paving alone, over fourteen thousand square metres of Pavatile's products have been specified, and that quantity doesn't even take into consideration the tarred roads, or the custom-developed culverts and the kilometres of kerbstones which Pavatile will be supplying.

It's certainly the biggest job Burger & Wallace have ever done, says Site Manager Louis de Villiers. Three teams of paving sub-contractors are simultaneously working on the site, under the leadership of three relatives — Frans (back on the job in spite of a heart attack and major surgery), Cliffie, and Frans' son-in-law Andrew.

* Lake Michelle is surrounded by Table Mountain National Park and an active environmental group ensures preservation of the wetlands.

Louis de Villiers looks on as pallets of paving products are unloaded from Pavatile's flagship truck using the rear-dismounted all-terrain forklift. Find out more about this Personalised Delivery Service.

Co-ordinating deliveries to these subcontractors on site is Moeketsi Lenkoe, a student from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology doing his in-service training with B&W. With work being done simultaneously on spots several kilometres apart, Moeketsi's job is a tough one, and he manages it with dedication.

Specialised products

The Lake Michelle development utilises several products which have been custom-developed by Pavatile specially for this project, and which have now also become part of Pavatile's comprehensive portfolio available to all customers. New developments include the EdgeBlok (seen here before grouting) and specialised culverts and corner kerbstones.

Paving the extensive roads could have resulted in such a great number of cuttings, and this would have impacted significantly on the cost and time of installing the paving. But where roads are paved with Pavatile's PlazaBlok and PlazaCobble in a Stacker configuration, installers can work very quickly, and the special square-off modules developed by Pavatile's in-house product development team mean that cuttings are not required at all along straight edges.
